MAP overlay editor

Start with a MAP

Load an overhead image such as a site plan or satellite photo, or drop one here. You can also drop or import a layout zip.

Selected shape

Select a shape to edit it. Shift-click to select several and merge them.

Types

Load a templates file, or make one with Design types…, to give shapes a type (such as Tent Campsite or Restroom) and typed attributes. Then right-click (or long-press) a shape and choose Attributes… to fill them in.

Place at least two well-separated points on the MAP and enter each one’s latitude and longitude (you can paste “lat, lon”). Three or more also correct stretch and skew, and every extra point averages out small placement errors.

Shortcuts

Tools

S: Select tool
Esc: Close the menu, cancel a tool, leave point mode, then deselect

Drawing

R C: Rectangle, circle
T: Triangle (for a right triangle, draw a rectangle and delete a corner in point mode)
L: Line (Shift: 15° steps)
D: Freehand trace: end near the start for an area, anywhere else for a path
A: Text: click to place or drag a width, then type. Double-click or Enter edits it; Esc finishes
I: Pictograph: pick a park map symbol (search by name), then click or drag on the MAP
hold Shift: While tracing: a straight segment from the last point (touch: tap Shift, then again to place it)

Selecting and moving

Shift-click: Add to or remove from the selection
⌘/Ctrl+A: Select all
drag: Move; snaps to other shapes’ points
hold ⌘/Ctrl: While dragging: place freely, no snapping
Option/Alt-drag: Duplicate and drag the copy
← ↑ → ↓: Nudge (with Shift: ×10)
right-click: Menu of actions (touch: long-press)

Handles, points and curves

P / double-click: Switch between box handles and point handles
hold Shift: Rotating: 15° steps. Resizing a corner: keep proportions
drag ◇: Curve an edge (on a flowing edge: pull out a new smooth point)
double-tap ◇: Add a corner or point there
Shift-click: A point: make it smooth or a corner
tap, Delete: Remove the tapped corner (a hole’s menu also has Delete hole)

Shapes

Enter / ⌘/Ctrl+I: Attributes: type, ref and attributes
⌘/Ctrl+D: Duplicate
⌘/Ctrl+C X V: Copy, cut, paste (also onto another map)
⌘/Ctrl+G: Group the selected shapes (a group inside a group just makes one bigger group)
Shift+⌘/Ctrl+G: Ungroup: every shape of the selected groups on its own
click again: On a selected group: select just the shape you clicked
Delete: Delete the selected shapes

View

wheel / pinch: Zoom
two-finger swipe: Pan
Space-drag: Pan (or drag the empty MAP)
F: Fit the MAP to the window
+ −: Zoom in, out

Maps (tabs)

click: Switch to that map
double-click: Rename it
right-click / ⋯: Duplicate, move, delete (touch: long-press)

Undo

⌘/Ctrl+Z: Undo
⇧⌘Z / Ctrl+Y: Redo
